Martial art virtues pinpoint the most valuable aspect of person’s daily social relationships and teach one ways to strengthen the ties with the people who matter the most. The only way to make these virtues truly meaningful is to live according to them everyday by shifting ones focus from ego and being more appreciate about other people’s achievements, having respect and compassion toward other people thus bring in a positive change and energy in everyone’s life.
Karate a form of martial art begins and ends with courtesy and respect. It is not only recognizing other person’s achievements or skill but also appreciating them for what they are. Respect is the foundation of most relationships in our lives professional or personal. In martial arts all ego’s get kicked at the door.
Martial art also teaches compassion ensuring that no physical harm is caused to the opponent in training. Compassion is a core virtue in martial arts. In a conflicting situation a true martial artist will show compassion by not using more force than necessary and never use the art as an outlet to ego and pride.
Martial art teaches to be humble, to acknowledge what has been gained from training. Being grateful translates into being appreciative to the contribution of other people in our life. It is not surprising that martial art virtues name the most important people and connections in one’s life. Martial virtues teach us and put things in a perspective that we should not take anything for granted.
The martial art virtues do not introduce any new concepts but hey just emphasize on the principles that one already knows through one’s culture, upbringing and experiences which are easily forgotten at times. Today’s society generally propagates self-interest and achievement of goals at all cost. Through martial art virtues we are reminded that respect, compassion and gratitude are the glue that holds most of our interpersonal bonds together.
