What is the right age to start learning martial arts? Is my little one ready to become a karate kid? It seems that children aged 3 and 4 years are the youngest of kids to be accepted in the martial arts program. So if your child is around 3 or 4 yrs old he or she will be accepted in your local martial arts school.

However there are other factors you should be aware of for your child if getting involved in a group activity for the first time will show signs of initial nervousness and unwillingness to get out of the floor without you. To avoid such a situation pre-frame your child’s mind so that child knows what is expected and what does a karate school look like. If possible let you child attend a martial arts class for a day or two.

Have realistic expectations with your child. For a 4 yr old the focus should be on co-ordination and fun. At the age of 4, martial arts learning cannot be about self-defense or discipline. These aspects can be generally introduced overtime as the kid gets older.

Most young kids have very short attention spans and consequently when teaching a 4-yr old the instructor needs to use a series of short but focused drills so that the child is able to maintain interest through out the duration of the class.

On the other hand a karate class is an ideal place to help you child learn the value of structure and basic discipline. All the above are just a few things to think about before enrolling your child in a martial arts class. Good luck and best wishes on your journey to enroll your child to the school of martial arts.
