People don’t realize that that practicing martial arts is not just about learning how to defend yourself; it is also about maintaining physical fitness. Most of are probably aware of (arguably) forms of martial arts that are centered on becoming fit such as TaeBo and Tai Chi. However, whilst these forms are about fitness primarily, other forms of martial arts such as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and even better known forms such as Tai Kwon Do are about reaching peak physical condition in order to enable to body to excel at tasks that are relevant to your body’s reflexes and overall strength.
Many forms of martial arts borrow heavily from each other. That is because most forms of martial arts focus on developing strength and flexibility. That is why Mixed Martial Arts are so popular. In order to reach peak physical condition you have to push your body to its limits. Body tone and shape is just a by product of the effort that is put in by martial artists in order to develop strength and flexibility in core muscle groups and joints. While it may seem like a better idea to just go to the gym and do a few weights – you are not getting a well rounded work out from it.
The fitness aspect of martial arts focuses on the body as a whole. There is emphasis on cardio, strength and flexibility. All of this combines to achieve a total body work out. If you get a work out and learn to defend yourself at the same time then that is a bonus. You are learning something while keeping yourself fit. You don’t have to go out and enter any tournaments in order to utilise the skills learnt while undertaking martial arts classes. Just use it as a means to get fit.
