Whether you want to learn martial arts in order to defend yourself or are just looking for a fun and interesting way to get fit you should ensure that you are psychologically ready to take the step. Martial arts are not an easy way to learn how to defend yourself; it forces you to adapt your mind and body to the correct mindset in order to feel confident when you are put in a situation where you need to use violence in order to walk away safely. It is also imperative that you are joining a martial arts club for the right reason. If you are not willing to work hard then you may find the physical aspect of getting your body into shape an unbearable task.

Of course it is also a matter of choosing the right style for you. If you are starting to get older and really can’t put yourself through a high impact work out then you should probably consider one of the more aerobic based forms of martial arts. There are many forms of martial arts that do not require any form of physical contact which focus on balance and circulation. If you are unsure, many martial arts centers offer introductory sessions for free or at a reduced cost. This way you can go along to a lesson at no risk to yourself (or your cash flow) to see if it is right for you.

You should ensure it is something you really wish to invest in before committing yourself to a martial arts program. Purchasing equipment such as mouth guards, weapons, practice pads and uniforms can be quite expensive. If you don’t intend sticking with it then it might be hard to resell the equipment later on down the track. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy.
