The martial art virtues do not introduce any new concepts but hey just emphasize on the principles that one already knows through one’s culture, upbringing and experiences which are easily forgotten at times. Today’s society generally propagates self-interest and achievement of goals at all cost. Through martial art virtues we are reminded that respect, compassion and gratitude are the glue that holds most of our interpersonal bonds together.

It is up to you to decide whether this philosophy fits in with your own principles and ethics. Most people find these ethics to be something that they can relate to on an intimate basis. Some people don’t place much value on the philosophy of martial arts and are in your karate class alongside you for very different reasons such as to learn self-defense techniques or just for basic health and fitness.
