The use of sanctions is an important element in the maintenance of discipline for all kinds of sport activities. The age and the developmental stage of the child should be taken into consideration when using sanctions. Sanctions should be fair and consistent and in the case of persistent offence should be increasingly applied. They should never be used to take revenge or to make a sports leader feel superior or better.
The following steps are suggested and should always be used in combination with the code of conduct for young people.
- All the rules of sport should be clearly stated and agreed on.
- A strict warning should be given if a code of conduct is broken
- A sanction, use of time-out through the usage of colorful cards in yellow, red and green should be encouraged. The usage of cards should be applied if the rule is broken for a second time.
- If the rule is broken for the third time, the child should be spoken to and if necessary parents and guardians should be informed.
- If a coach is comfortable than only the usage of sanction should be applied. If an appropriate action is difficult to derive right away, the child should be told that the matter will be sorted out later at a specified time or as a soon as possible.
- A child in any manner should not be sanctioned for making errors when he or she is playing.
- Sanctions should be used sparingly. Constant sanctioning and criticism can cause a child to turn away from sport activities.
- Once sanctions have been imposed, it is important to make the young person feel as a valued member of the group again.
The code of ethics in sports helps form disciplined practitioners, stay in focus and encourages young people to become more responsible towards the sport and their actions in particular.
