Learning martial arts is a discipline that gives results based upon the amount of work you are willing to put in. This is why most professional martial artists spend time in the gym working on their core strength and flexibility. If you want to get the most out of it then it is recommended that you pick up another sport as well as martial arts. It is also worth your effort if you go for a walk or jog. This can greatly improve your cardio capacity and will allow you to work out longer without getting too tired.
Martial arts are centered on discipline. Not only as it applies to mental strength but how your body reacts to stresses that are applied to it. If you have trouble doing simple tasks because you are easily tired or you lack the strength then you will need to get yourself into shape. Whilst martial arts are good at helping you get into shape – you will have to work at it outside of the time when you are attending a class. Don’t expect to attend a class once a week and get fit quickly. It is a better idea to take the lessons you learn in your class as it applies to fitness and practicing the stretches and exercises at home as well.
Learning martial arts is not for the lazy. It may actually be a way to break your bad habits as they apply to keeping yourself fit. It helps promote a healthy mind and body. An active mind can lead to an active body – this is where the learning component of becoming a martial artist can help. The physical aspect does come down to the individual however. Start simple. Don’t go out and join a gym, just go for a walk every afternoon or do some push ups every day. From there you can move onto something else that builds on what you have already achieved.

However, whilst these forms are about fitness primarily, other forms of martial arts such as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and even better known forms such as Tai Kwon Do are about reaching peak physical condition in order to enable to body to excel at tasks that are relevant to your body’s reflexes and overall strength.
Many forms of martial arts borrow heavily from each other. That is because most forms of martial arts focus on developing strength and flexibility. That is why Mixed Martial Arts are so popular. In order to reach peak physical condition you have to push your body to its limits. Body tone and shape is just a by product of the effort that is put in by martial artists in order to develop strength and flexibility in core muscle groups and joints. While it may seem like a better idea to just go to the gym and do a few weights – you are not getting a well rounded work out from it.

What is the right age to start learning martial arts? Is my little one ready to become a karate kid? It seems that children aged 3 and 4 years are the youngest of kids to be accepted in the martial arts program. So if your child is around 3 or 4 yrs old he or she will be accepted in your local martial arts school.
However there are other factors you should be aware of for your child if getting involved in a group activity for the first time will show signs of initial nervousness and unwillingness to get out of the floor without you. To avoid such a situation pre-frame your child’s mind so that child knows what is expected and what does a karate school look like. If possible let you child attend a martial arts class for a day or two.
Have realistic expectations with your child. For a 4 yr old the focus should be on co-ordination and fun. At the age of 4, martial arts learning cannot be about self-defense or discipline. These aspects can be generally introduced overtime as the kid gets older.
Most young kids have very short attention spans and consequently when teaching a 4-yr old the instructor needs to use a series of short but focused drills so that the child is able to maintain interest through out the duration of the class.
On the other hand a karate class is an ideal place to help you child learn the value of structure and basic discipline.
